The essay below is the first essay assignment. We had to read two articles  “the truth about girt” and “what true education should be,” these were very interesting articles and this essay explains  my belief  on true eduction.

After reading “the truth about girt” and “what true education should be,” my belief about real useful education is more true. I always believed that education shouldn’t be stuffed into the brain and that intelligence doesn’t come from genes but instead dedication. When I was a high school student I felt like teachers were preaching instead of teaching. I felt this way because my classes weren’t very interactive. I felt discussion would have been a more efficient way of learning.

As stated in “what true education should be” “Pupils are more like oysters than sausages, the job of teaching is not to stuff them and seal them up, but to help them open and reveal the riches within.” In the classes where I learned the most, we had the most discussions. This is because students could see how his/her point of view compares to another student‘s. When we would discuss an event in a book, for example, classmates would portray different points of view why the event happened, thoughts that opened my mind more and aided my learning. Discussions also supports learning through interactions, when a teacher talks all class long student aren’t developing thoughts on the matter, thoughts just drift away by constant bombardment of information and notes.

In high school I learned the most during senior year, this is because I was enrolled in Advance Placement classes which were college based. In college courses students are treated more like oysters, classes are more discussion based then in high school. In all of my current courses we teach ourselves via reading and researching, class is more discussion based to enrich the knowledge found in our self-teachings. This creates a very different learning environment. The learning in college is better because of two main reasons:

1.) What you learn in college is narrowed down to ones choice in profession. I feel like it is a more efficient way of teaching. I think this because no matter how good the teachers is if a students isn’t interested, he/she isn’t going to learn what is being taught.

2.) in a typical high school class, there are a couple of pupils how are just not interested in what is being taught (“trouble makers” who disrupt class), the college environment eliminates these individuals because college isn’t free and one chooses what one wants to learn.

As a current college student I hope to achieve two main goals. My first goal is to achieve my degree in sociology/psychology, but I want to leave college with more then just a paper, it isn’t as important to me as building knowledge. My second goal is to find a job where I can help students achieve greatness and further their own knowledge because I experienced being a student and also struggled. I will meet these goals by working hard and learning how to help others “reveal the riches from within.”

I always believed that education shouldn’t be stuffed into the brain and that intelligence doesn’t come from genes but instead dedication, these two articles show that my belief is correct. like the “what true education should be” states “Pupils are more like oysters than sausages, the job of teaching is not to stuff them and seal them up, but to help them open and reveal the riches within.”
